Resources

Whether you’re moving across town or across the country, these moving resources and tips will help you better prepare for your transition. Lee Moving & Storage, Inc. handles all types of moves, from residential to commercial.

Moving can be an overwhelming experience, but careful planning makes it far more manageable. As the time for the move approaches, make yourself a checklist of all the tasks that must be completed and set up a timeline.

At eight to 10 weeks before the move, begin planning what to take and what to donate or throw away. Talk to your children’s school to arrange the transfer of records.

In the month before the move, begin packing things you don’t need every day. Prepare records for transfer and send out change-of-address cards. Arrange for storage if necessary.

By two weeks before the move, arrange to have your bank accounts transferred and request a transfer of medical and dental records. Cancel regular deliveries like newspapers.

Two days before the move, it’s time to get down to business. If your mover is handling packing, then they will begin the process. Otherwise, you will need to finish packing.

Supplies may include the basics like boxes, tape, and markers, but additional materials may be necessary if you’re moving larger or delicate items. Plan ahead for items that need to be carefully wrapped or contact your mover to find out if they offer special services for your large or awkward items.

Be sure to mark boxes clearly and include a list of contents on at least two sides so that the list is visible no matter how the box is packed or stacked. Try to keep boxes under 30 pounds and pack heavy items in smaller boxes whenever possible. Designate a few boxes for things like bed linens, a few changes of clothes, toiletries, and other essentials to have readily available at the new location.

Pets present particular challenges during a move. Acclimate them ahead of time with short car rides. On moving day, keep pets confined to a quiet room with a few favorite toys. Make stops as necessary along the way and be sure to keep them leashed at all times. Make sure that your pet has the appropriate vaccination records and any other required documentation, especially if crossing state lines.

Be sure to provide the movers with a contact number so that they can reach you in the case of any complications. Get plenty of sleep the night before and take care to stay hydrated.
