To avoid heat-related injuries or illness, consider these tips for staying safe while moving in the heat.

Start Early, Work Late

It can be tempting to work through the day to finish moving quickly. However, the middle of the day is also the hottest, as U.V. rays are strongest from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. To avoid this, start early in the morning and take a break until temperatures come down again. Most professional residential moving services prefer to start in the early morning, making the schedule easy to stick to.

Dress Smart

Wearing tight, dark fabric can be a recipe for disaster in scorching summer heat. To avoid trapping heat unnecessarily, wear lightweight, loose clothing made out of breathable fabric such as cotton or linen in light colors. Synthetic fabrics like polyester and rayon also trap heat, so try to avoid them as well. Don’t forget to wear a hat and sunglasses to protect your face and eyes from the sun.

Stay Hydrated

Whether the moving project is traditional or specialized, summer heat and physical activity can be a fast route to dehydration. Be sure to bring a cooler of bottled water for anyone helping out as well as for your residential moving service workers. Try to take frequent water breaks, as dehydration can creep up unexpectedly, and be on the lookout for symptoms like a dry mouth, fatigue, headaches, and dizziness.

Know Overheating Symptoms

Attempting to work through the symptoms of overheating can be extremely dangerous. Before moving day, get familiar with the symptoms. These include obvious signs like elevated body temperature and thirst, but symptoms can also be more subtle: nausea, headaches, and muscle cramps can be signs of overheating as well.

Moving in the summer doesn’t have to be dangerous, and there’s no reason to do it alone. For more information about Lee Moving & Storage’s moving services and storage solutions, contact us today for a free quote!
