An “open first” box is simply one box (or more) packed with the essentials that are most needed when moving into a new space. By keeping the most important and time-sensitive belongings in one place, you can avoid the hassle of having to search for everything you need right after moving to your new home. In short, all of the items in the first box you open should fall into two categories: items needed to get through the night, and items needed to continue unpacking.
Items Needed to Get Through the First Night(s)
An “open first” box should contain everything needed for comfort, hygiene, and sleeping for your first night in a new space: a towel and soap for bathing; chargers and personal electronics for some well-deserved downtime; and plates, cups, and utensils for the first meal in your new home, especially if kitchen tools are being kept in storage. Finally, pack any bedroom essentials such as sheets, pillows, and blankets to get a good night’s rest after moving.
Items Needed to Continue Unpacking
The first box you open should also include any essentials needed to make the unpacking process efficient and fast. Consider including things like cleaning and sanitizing supplies, as well as practical tools such as screwdrivers, box cutters, and hammers, just in case anything in your new home needs fixing or adjusting as you continue unpacking. A first aid kit, including bandages and painkillers, can also be a life-saver in case of minor illnesses, pains, or injuries.
