Do a Little at a Time
It’s not reasonable to completely declutter all in one day. Start early and start slow. Do a room, a closet, or even a drawer at a time. This will make the task much more approachable.
Choose What’s Important
This is, for many people, the hardest part of decluttering. It’s easy to get attached to things, even if they’ll never be useful again. Try figuring out priorities ahead of time. Some useful questions might include, “Is this a family heirloom?” or “Have I used this within the past six months?”
Decide Early How Much to Take
It’s important to take into consideration how much room will be available at the new place. Spaces like garages, attics, and storage units come in handy for the extras, but they aren’t always an option. Figure out ahead of time how much furniture can come along for the move or how much clothes will fit in the new closet. Then, try to part with the rest.
Get Rid of Extras
During the packing process, people sometimes realize they have too much of one thing. Maybe years of lost phone chargers suddenly appear, or 20 plates aren’t necessary now that the kids have moved out. Getting rid of the extras can make a huge difference in the moving load.
Donate to Charity
Many people choose to donate the items they no longer use, whether they’re motivated to help the less fortunate, decrease their environmental impact, or just get a tax break. Start a donation pile, but be sure to donate only items that are still in good condition.
