Whether moving to a new home or office, downsizing, or renovating, most people need to rent a storage unit at some point. By packing storage units effectively, customers can maximize the use of their space and ensure that property is stored safely. When it’s time to fill a storage unit, here are five strategies to do so effectively. A man moving boxes acquired through residential moving services from Lee Moving & Storage in New Orleans, LA

1. Consider Access

Group together items that will need to be accessed during storage and pack them last, at the front of the storage unit. This makes it easier to unpack them when it’s time for use. Another important access tip: leave an aisle a foot or two wide down the center of the unit so that items in the back can be accessed if necessary without unpacking and repacking the entire unit.

2. Take Advantage of Empty Space

When storing something that is itself used for storage, such as a filing cabinet or dresser, fill the drawers before placing it in the unit. This is a good way to avoid wasting space with a box that contains only small items.

3. Make Use of Vertical Space

Pack the heaviest and largest items at the bottom of the unit and stack smaller and lighter boxes on top in descending size order, using a ladder or the help of a tall friend if necessary. Consider storing sofas and other large furniture items vertically and stacking chairs to take advantage of the high ceilings.

4. Look for Hanging Wardrobe Boxes

These versatile, space-saving items can be used to hang clothing, as well as to store bedding, drapery, tools, cookware, and other bulky items.

5. Take It Apart

If a larger item can be disassembled and reassembled, do so before storing it to save space. Make sure to store nuts, bolts, and other small items together. Simply place them in a clear plastic bag and securely tape the bag to the disassembled item.

Carefully thought-out planning and packing will make it much easier to pack a storage unit effectively. While this process takes time, it will ensure that items remain free from damage and can be unpacked easily when it’s time to do so.
