Houseplants aren't usually at the forefront of your mind when you're planning to move, but they can be a surprisingly tricky item to pack up and transport to your new place. Because plants are fragile, vulnerable to temperature changes, and need air, water, and light, moving them requires a little extra attention and planning. Here are three tips to help you move with houseplants safely and easily.
Decide Early How Your Plants Will Travel
Whether you're moving a few miles away or across the country, there will be a lot of work to do when moving day arrives, so you don't want to be worrying about your houseplants at the last minute. As early as you can in the planning process, determine how you're going to get your plants to your new home. Depending on your varieties of plants, the distance you're moving, and the time of year, your movers may be able to transport them. You may also prefer to bring plants along in your own vehicle or ship them to your destination. Also, if you're moving to another state, review that state's regulations and laws concerning plant imports.
Prepare Your Plants for the Journey
In the weeks leading up to your move, repot your houseplants into plastic containers using fresh, sterile soil. Also remember to prune and water them as moving day approaches, and keep an eye out for any signs of pests or disease. If you're worried about bugs, place a flea collar on the bases of your plastic containers.
Pack Your Plants Securely
Properly and securely packing your plants will help ensure that they arrive at your new home healthy and in one piece. To begin, put a plastic bag around each plant's plastic container so that the soil stays in place. Then, if you're putting your plants into boxes, make sure that the bottom of each box is sealed with tape and that there are enough holes to allow air to flow through. Finish up by loosely packing the space around the plant with newspaper or packing paper, and remember to write "Fragile" and "Live Plant" on the outside of each box.
